UPMC's Lung Transplantation Program is one of the most experienced centers in the world for lung and combined heart-lung transplantation. Since our program's inception in 1982, we have performed more than 2,000 lung and heart-lung transplants. Approximately 30 percent of our recipients have been declined for lung transplantation at other centers. Our physicians are pioneers in the use of ECMO, or extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation and actively involved in research pertaining to organ perfusion. (ex-vivo)
