Introduction/Rationale
Pet groomers may have unique exposures to vapors dusts gases and fumes and may be exposed to unique asthmagens and tussogens. The prevalence of chronic cough in this occupation is unknown in this occupational group.
Methods
We surveyed pet groomers worldwide using an internet based Google forms driven survey that asked questions regarding occupational exposures and pulmonary symptoms including questions that have been used in the NHANES survey to assess for prevalence of asthma. The link to the Survey was posted on Facebook groups in the United States, Australia and Europe with requests to disseminate Survey after obtaining permission from Group administrators. The Survey link was also posted on Pet Groomer forums.
Results
2097 unique responses were obtained, most (79%) were from the United States, 98% of respondents were women (n=2065), ~ 82 % (n= 1750) were below the age of 45 years. 78% worked full time and 73% had been grooming for at least 5 years. 76% (n=1593) were non-smokers. Among the entire cohort, 41 % responded “ Yes” to the question “Do you usually cough on most days for 3 consecutive months or more during the year?”, 33% reported that cough had lasted at least a year. 33% of the cohort with a cough reported their health to be fair or poor. Among non-smokers 32% responded “ Yes” to the question “Do you usually cough on most days for 3 consecutive months or more during the year?”, 29% reported that cough had lasted at least a year. 34 % of non-smokers with a cough reported their health to be fair or poor.
Conclusions
Pet Groomers are mostly young non-smoking women with a high self-reported diagnosis of cough. Self-reported rates of cough lasting at least 3 months were 3 times higher than in the general population. Approximately a third of those with a cough (regardless of smoking status) reported fair or poor health status. Evaluation of the mechanisms of cough in this occupational group and measures to implement exposure control are urgently needed.
