Background : From 2006 to 2011, we had several cases of unclassified interstitial diseases with fibrosis with symptoms of severe respiratory distress and high mortality in South Korea. By epidemiologic studies, we found out that inhalation of toxic elements from humidifier disinfectants (HD) was the reason of the lung injuries. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether HD could affect the asthma development or decreased pulmonary functions in children. Methods : We distributed an ISAAC questionnaire to 613 elementary school children. Any history of exposure of HD in infancy was also asked, and 219 children answered they had used HD (HD+ group). All subjects performed pulmonary function tests by impulse oscillometry system (IOS). The association of history of HD use and wheezing, asthma diagnosis, allergic diseases, and pulmonary function parameters was investigated by statistical analysis. Results : Wheezing episodes at any time in the past, wheezing in the past 12 months were significantly more frequent in HD+ than HD- group (17.8% vs 9.9%, P=0.005, 4.6% vs 1.5%, p=0.025 respectively). Subjects who were more exposed HD showed higher R5 and R10 of IOS (P=0.048, P=0.027, respectively). History of atopic dermatitis or allergic rhinitis was also more common in HD+ group (P=0.032, 0.007, respectively). History of asthma diagnosis had no significant differences between two groups. (47.4% vs 52.6%, P=0.117). Conclusions : This study showed that exposure to toxic elements of HD might be a cause of wheezing episodes or decreased lung functions in a dose-response manner in children.
