Introduction : Many patients use the internet to obtain information on health-related purposes, however its use has not been evaluated among patients with IPF and their relatives.Material and methods : Using self-completed questionnaire in IPF patients and their descendants, our aims were i) to assess prevalence of the internet use to obtain information on IPF, ii) to demonstrate predictive factors, and iii) to evaluate its impact. Results and discussion : 59 patients and 44 descendants answered. Prevalence of the internet use was 60% (34/57) in patients and 75% (33/44) in their descendants. Predictive factors for patients were the daily use of the internet, a previous health research on the internet and a low CVF. The only predictive factor for descendant was a previous internet research on health purpose. Community sites were the most often visited websites. Researchs were mainly in the peri-diagnosis period. It was considered positively, with a feeling of better understanding of the disease and an improved communication with the physician. However, anxiety was not reduced for 60% of both patients and descendants.Conclusion : Most of patients with IPF and their descendants use the internet to have information about diagnosis, treatments and prognosis. Physicians have to be attentive to patients and families requests about their Internet researches.
