RATIONALE
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Although new therapeutics in COPD like various inhalers has been introduced, it has been little known about new biomarkers to predict progression and prognosis. We identified potential COPD biomarker candidates using word embedding.
METHODS
To tract the potential biomarkers associated with COPD, we selected it among biomarkers studied in lung cancer. The degree of similarity of selected 16 biomarkers and COPD was measured by word embedding. Fragments of cytokeratin-19 (cyfra21-1) were selected as the highest similarity value. We performed to evaluate the association between cyfra21-1 levels and parameters associated with COPD in a Korean COPD cohort.
RESULTS
Plasma cyfra21-1 levels were observed in patient with COPD and controls (4.3±5.9 vs. 3.9 ±3.6 ng/mL, p=0.611). And, emphysema index showed significant correlation with plasma cyfra21-1 levels (correlation coefficient 0.2, p=0.015).
CONCLUSIONS
This study suggested that cyfra21-1 might be a potential biomarker associated with emphysema extent in COPD, and word embedding may be a useful tool for searching biomarkers.
Key word: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, biomarker, word embedding, cyfra21-1
