Background. Severe asthma represents a serious public health problem as mortality and economic costs are higher. However, severe asthma epidemiology is not yet studied in Algeria. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of severe asthma in the asthmatic population at various health centers in the Tizi-Ouzou city and to evaluate the risk factors associated with the severity of the disease.Methods. A cross sectional study was carried out on 140 asthmatic patients based on a modified NHLBI questionnaire. Results. We found that 12.86% of them have severe asthma. 61.1% were aged over 50 years; 51.71% were female, 66.7% reported having a family history of asthma and more than 82% had asthma after age of 12. However, only 9.28 % were exposed in their lives to smoke. Interestingly, the majority of them (64.29%) suffer from at least another disease including allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, high blood pressure, diabetes, bronchitis, cardiovascular diseases, and lung infections.Conclusion. We reported for the first time a 12.86% of severe asthma in Tizi-Ouzou city and our results suggest that the risk factors associated with the occurrence of severe asthma were older age, late onset asthma, the presence of a family history of asthma and comorbidities.
