Rationale
Users of traditional biomass fuel stoves have a continuous exposure to an increased level of particulate matter (PM). PM2.5 reaches the alveoli where they are captured by macrophages. An inflammatory response occurs in which IL6 plays an important role. When these stoves are replaced by others that are less polluting because they use a cleaner fuel or are certified improved biomass ones, it is assumed that both IL6 levels and respiratory symptoms would be lower.
Methods
We studied women from 9 rural communities at Ayacucho, Peru, (2750 masl) users of traditional biomass stoves or improved biomass ones. After they signed the informed consent, a history and clinical exam was realized and a blood sample was drawn. 56 (33.5%) were users of the traditional biomass stoves and 111 (66.5%) of the improved stoves, ranging their ages between 17 and 76 years old. Statistical analysis was performed using STATA v. 13.
Results
Women users of improved biomass stoves have lesser median IL-6 levels than users of the traditional ones (4.91 vs. 8.96, p=0.014). Respiratory symptoms showed no statistical differences between both groups.
Conclusions
Users of improved biomass stoves have lesser levels of IL-6 than users of the traditional ones. There would be a decrease in the inflammation resulting from indoor pollution caused by biomass when installing the certified improved stoves.
