Rational: Health education is one of the important measures of comprehensive treatment of COPD. It is a series of systematic and planned educational activities to improve the life quality of patients. However, little is known about the health education needs of patients with COPD and the factors thereof in China. The purpose of this analysis is to investigate the education needs of patients with COPD and to analyze the factors affecting their needs.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study employing the lung information needs questionnaire (LINQ, full score: 25) to investigate patients' education needs, the social support rate scale (SSRS, full score: 66) developed by Chinese expert Xiao Shuiyuan to investigate social support given to patients. From March to May 2017, patients with COPD registered with the respiratory outpatient department of a Level 3 Grade A hospital in Beijing were asked to respond to the questionnaires. Multiple linear regression linear regression was used for the analysis.
Results: 211 participants were included Baseline age was 66.25±5.91; 97.6% were male; only 0.5% lived alone; 85.3% be cared by partner; 45.5% diagnosed more than 5 years. The demand for health education in patients is moderate, with an average score of 16.39±3.90 on a 0-25 scale. Higher scores are found in medication knowledge (3.84±1.172 on a 0-5 scale), self-management (4.48±1.057 on a 0-6 scale), dietary needs (1.68±0.32 on a 0-2 scale) and sport needs (3.46±1.28 on a 0-5 scale). Lower scores were found in disease knowledge (1.49±0.89 on a 0-4 scale) and smoke-quitting knowledge (1.44±0.39 on a 0-3 scale). Multiple linear regression linear regression showed that factors of health education needs were: education background(p=0.001);living condition(p=0.015);care taker(p=0.018); accompanying diseases(p=0.003); Objective support dimension of SSRS(p=0.000);Subjective support dimension of SSRS(p=0.000);availability dimension of SSRS(p=0.002);R2=0.584 .
Conclusion:In China, patients' needs on health education are still relatively high, raising requirements to continue strengthening work in health education. Therefore it is suggested to consider the factors affecting patients' access to health knowledge while meeting their demands, so as to perform targeted health guidance for each patient.
