The collagen fiber, major component of extra cellular matrix in human lung, is crucial in preventing from over-distending in inspiration. But the precise role of the collagen fiber in the lung has not been resolved. The collagen fiber-orientation, which is important to evaluate the function of the collagen fiber network, has not been studied for the human lung tissue. Recently Osaki’s microwave method has been established to estimate the collagen fiber orientation in the sheets and applied to human skin and bone to analyze the relationship between these orientations and these mechanical properties. In this context we succeeded to make the human lung tissue into the sheet samples for the microwave method and to measure the collagen-fiber orientation. In the collagen orientation, the emphysematous lesions were divided into two areas. One area, which was poorly orientated, was consisted of circular airspaces in loupe. Another area, which was highly orientated, was consisted of ellipsoidal ones. The directions of long axles in the ellipsoidal airspaces almost agreed with the collagen fiber orientation measured by the microwave method. These results demonstrated that the collagen orientation was related with the progression of human emphysema.
