This session will provide attendees an update on the development of diagnostic technologies for rapid identification and susceptibility of pathogens causing acute pneumonia. The speakers will 1) describe the scientific basis of the new molecular tests; 2) provide a perspective from the clinical microbiology laboratory on the advantages and challenges in implementing and integrating these new and emerging methodologies into clinical practice; and 3) assess the clinical utility of the rapidly evolving diagnostic technology. Due to the number new tests and concepts, we plan to leave adequate time for Q & A.
