This course is focused on the bedside management of mechanical ventilation and will stress a physiologic approach to managing the ventilator and interpreting the effects of interventions. We will cover appropriate oxygenation goals, uses and physiologic effects of PEEP, heart-lung interaction as it relates to mechanical ventilation, the physiology of prone ventilation in severe ARDS, management of the flow-limited patient including status asthmaticus and severe obstructive disease, and patient-ventilator synchrony. We will explore controversies in the physiologic literature concerning these techniques and critically examine commonclinical rationales for their use. The course will conclude with small group case discussions in which participants will apply the principles covered in the didactic sessions.
