Pathophysiology of pulmonary disease in neuromuscular disorders including mechanism and type of respiratory failure, evaluation and anticipatory guidance including conventional and recently introduced novel techniques for pulmonary function testing, sleep evaluation and various aspects of pulmonary management including recently published ATS guidelines on chronic home invasive ventilation will be reviewed. Practical approach for use by primary care physician in terms of routine care, monitoring in the out-patient-clinic, investigations, indications for referral to different specialists and palliative care will be discussed. Discussion will include recent advances in the management, novel therapies, disorder specific ventilation modes and ventilators, and rehabilitation techniques.
