Functional status is one of the most important predictors of health outcomes in older patients and it becomes more predictive than specific diagnoses as people age. Frailty, characterized by a generalized vulnerability to physiologic stressors, is becoming increasingly recognized as a risk factor for poor outcomes in adults with chronic lung disease. This session will highlight current evidence and deficits in knowledge related to the assessment of frailty in interstitial lung disease (ILD), with a specific focus on frailty as an outcome measure in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Future research directions in this area will also be discussed.
