This session will discuss various aspects of the treatment of severe community-acquired pneumonia, including the following topics; 1) antibiotic therapy, encompassing aspects such as timing of initiation, antibiotic choices, combination therapy and duration of antibiotic therapy, 2) recognition of cardiac complications and a description of the pathogenesis and potential treatment of them, and 3) adjunctive therapies encompassing macrolide antibiotics, corticosteroids, statins, and anti-platelet agents.
